Aging Out & Overcoming Obstacles: Caroline’s Story of Resilience

In a society where 25% of young adults aging out of foster care experience homelessness, programs like COMPASS are playing a crucial role in providing much-needed transitional support. Caroline's story stands as a testament to the transformative impact of COMPASS, highlighting how her life took a positive turn with the help of David and Margaret. From homelessness to becoming a certified cosmetology nail technician, Caroline's journey is an inspiring example of resilience and the importance of compassionate guidance.

Finding Support in Desperate Times
Caroline's life had been marked by a continuous cycle of instability. Having grown up in the foster care system and bouncing from home to home, the lack of support ultimately led her down the path of homelessness for three challenging years. Recognizing the need for a change, her county social worker introduced Caroline to COMPASS, where she discovered the much-needed support system she had been longing for.

Overcoming Personal Challenges
Caroline's struggles extended beyond her housing situation. She battled depression and anxiety, which made it difficult for her to envision a brighter future. However, with the unwavering support and encouragement of the staff at David and Margaret, Caroline found the strength to persist, pushing past her limitations and getting connected to mental health resources.

Building a Foundation for Success
As a participant in the Transitional Housing Program at COMPASS, Caroline was set up with safe, stable housing and given access to personal and professional development services. Working with our education and employment specialist, Caroline started a paid internship at Dave & Maggie’s Café, an on-site eatery that doubles as a training ground for transition-age youth to gain work experience. Along with this hands-on experience, Caroline attended COMPASS Training workshops where she learned how to build her resume, practiced interview skills, and discussed educational goals. These workshops equipped her with essential skills and knowledge, empowering her to cultivate a sense of purpose and direction in life.

Turning Dreams into Reality
With the newfound confidence from her training and experience, Caroline took a decisive step towards her dreams. She engaged in meaningful conversations with her COMPASS case manager about pursuing cosmetology. Recognizing the potential within herself, Caroline made the courageous choice to enroll in cosmetology school in January 2023. Determined to achieve her goals, she embarked on a journey to become a certified cosmetology nail technician.

Celebrating Success and Aspiring for More
As of today, Caroline stands tall as an officially certified cosmetology nail technician. She has not only overcome the challenges she once faced but has also transformed her passion into a profession. With her heart set on opening her own salon, Caroline is now ready to enter the workforce armed with the skills she acquired at COMPASS Programs.

Caroline's incredible journey exemplifies the power of transitional services provided by COMPASS Programs. By offering crucial support, guidance, and training, COMPASS enables young adults like Caroline to break the cycle of adversity and strive for a better future. Caroline's story reminds us that with compassion, opportunities, and a nurturing environment, dreams can indeed become reality. Through ongoing commitment, programs like COMPASS at David & Margaret can continue to make a palpable difference in the lives of those who are aging out of foster care.
